Grand Canyon Faces Extreme Heat Warning After Hiker Deaths
US · Published Jun 22, 2026
The Grand Canyon National Park is under an extreme heat warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) for Monday through Tuesday.
Temperatures in the inner canyon are expected to reach or exceed 110°F (43°C), posing significant risks to visitors.

Why It's Important?

The extreme heat poses life-threatening risks, especially for hikers in the inner canyon. The recent fatalities highlight the dangers of underestimating the heat, which intensifies as one descends into the canyon. The combination of high temperatures, low humidity, and strenuous activity can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Additionally, the dry conditions and elevated temperatures are increasing the risk of wildfires in the region. Visitors are advised to avoid hiking during the hottest parts of the day and to be aware of the significant temperature differences between the rim and the canyon floor.
